Toto Wolff defends Lewis Hamilton after his penalty in the sprint race
The British driver received a five-second penalty during the sprint race. This dropped him from fourth to seventh place. According to his boss, Toto Wolff, the penalty was unjustified.
The sanction divides. So, neck and neck, Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez came into contact twice. At the beginning of the third sector, the two men touched each other for the first time, and then a second time a few meters further.
Immediately, the commissioners opened an investigation into this event. They then penalized the British driver with a five-second penalty, even though the contacts were minimal. Toto Wolff, the boss of the Mercedes team, considers this penalty unjust.
« « He was slow before, it didn’t change anything. » »
« I believe it was a racing incident. He was alongside, he slipped, but Perez didn’t leave any space. I don’t think it deserved a penalty, » Toto Wolff reacted, speaking to Canal +.
The Mexican driver was then overtaken by Lewis Hamilton and the two Ferraris. On the radio, the Red Bull driver indicated that he had no grip on the rear tires before calling it quits. According to Toto Wolff, the incident between the two cars didn’t change Sergio Perez’s pace. « He was slow before, it didn’t change anything. »
