The compulsive need to win of Lewis Hamilton is at its highest, according to his technical director
James Allison, the technical director of Mercedes, has no doubt that Hamilton has a desire to win again in F1.
Since the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, and no victories in the following two years, the seven-time world champion has remained behind in the Formula 1 standings, with a dominance from Max Verstappen and Red Bull in 2023.
Some have wondered if the British still had this desire to succeed after this difficult period.
However, Mercedes is banking on the work done on their 2024 W15 car to challenge for the title. James Allison, the technical director of Mercedes, asserts that if the seven-time world champion can win again, it will depend on Lewis Hamilton himself, but also on what the team will give him to succeed: But whether he can do it or not, it will be much more in the hands of the equipment we have given him than in his own hands. He has always had this ability.
Last season, Lewis Hamilton renewed his contract for two years, which shows the driver’s motivation: “In Lewis’ case, it is just an essential part of who he is, so there is no doubt about his motivation to return to victory,” said Allison. The driver hopes for an eighth world championship to reaffirm his identity.
« I think you would have a hard time finding a driver anywhere on the grid who wasn’t motivated,” explained the technical director of Mercedes. « I think this kind of territory comes with them. And in general, the more successful the drivers are, the more an compulsive need to win becomes inevitable.
