Nick Heidfeld is convinced that he could be able to fight for the title with the BMW-Sauber team, but he admits that this goal will be difficult to achieve for next year.
The German team was one of the revelations of the 2007 season, becoming the third-best team behind Ferrari and McLaren.
In the end, BMW finished in second place in the standings after McLaren was stripped of all its points following the verdict in the espionage case.
Heidfeld finished fifth in the drivers’ standings and the German thinks the team will be ready to start winning races next season.
The title, however, is still a long way off and will only be conceivable in a few years, he acknowledges.
« The title is more realistic than ever, especially since I am convinced that it can be possible with BMW, » said Heidfeld.
« It will probably not be in 2008, but the goal for BMW next season is to win a race, and then compete for the title. And that’s my goal too. »
Heidfeld also admitted afterward that he did not expect his team to be this strong this year.
« Before the season, I did not think we could put forward such a level of performance, » said Heidfeld on BMW’s official website.
« I had expected Renault to show greater resilience. I did not expect things to go so well, » he concluded.
