Toyota has ended its pursuit to sign Fernando Alonso for its team next season.
Since the end of the season, Fernando Alonso was speculated to be moving to various teams for 2008. The rumors intensified after the termination of his contract with McLaren. Among the teams in the running to acquire the Spaniard, Renault was the favorite, but Red Bull, Toyota, and Williams were also contenders to secure the driver for 2008.
Toyota has therefore thrown in the towel today, not thinking they can give the Spaniard what he wants, and it seems that only Renault could reunite with their double world champion next season.
« I don’t think we are ready to offer Fernando Alonso the type of product he is looking for, » commented Toyota team manager – John Howett.
Toyota also believes that, just like them, Red Bull is not ready to have a driver of Alonso’s stature.
« I also don’t think that Red Bull has the necessary skills to have a driver like Alonso… » Continued the Englishman.
« In my opinion, they need one or two years to hope to have a chance of winning races… » he concluded.
