Phillip Island wants to host the Australian GP in 2008!

The Australian circuit of Phillip Island, located in the south of the country, has expressed its interest in hosting the next Formula 1 Grand Prix instead of Albert Park in Melbourne in a few seasons.

The future of the Australian event seems to have been facing difficulties for some time as Albert Park experienced a record deficit in 2007. Announced in a statement by the president of the Australian GP, Flemington could soon replace Melbourne.

Andrew Fox, CEO of the Phillip Island circuit, stated that he would bring the circuit up to FIA standards if necessary to keep a GP on the oceanic continent.

« A lot of work would be needed to be able to approve our track for F1, but I can guarantee you that we can do it », Fox told the Herald Sun newspaper. « It’s one of the best circuits in Australia… »

If the FIA agreement to move the Melbourne Grand Prix was given in 2008, the circuit would not be available until 2011. According to Fox, it would also be necessary to sign a long-term contract to ensure the costs of the implemented work can be recouped.
