BMW Motorsport director Mario Theissen welcomed the decision made by the FIA’s court of appeal in rejecting McLaren’s appeal on the fuel issue, but still needs to see the rules clarified.
The appeal was therefore considered inadmissible, which means that Kimi Räikkönen is the official champion of the year 2007.
Theissen is happy with this outcome in what has been the subject of controversy at the end of the F1 season.
« Of course, I am happy that this issue is now closed and the result is as expected, » he said.
« No, not on our side. If the sentence had been different, then the situation would have become dismaying. »
But despite the appeal hailing the judge’s decision, Theissen stated that the case has led to uncertainties regarding fuel temperature regulations. These will need to be resolved before the start of the next season.
« It has become quite clear that the regulations regarding the 10-degree (Celsius) temperature difference between the fuel and the ambient air apparently lack precision, » Theissen said.
Such is the question and, in my opinion, these queries will not disappear with the decision of the Court of Appeal. But the technical working group must consider and consult with the technical directors to achieve clear regulations on the future use of fuel.
When asked if the issue needed to be resolved before the 2008 season, Theissen said: « Absolutely. »
