Malcolm Wilson, the head of the Ford teams in WRC, stated that winning the driver’s title with Grönholm was almost unrealistic, but the Briton does not want to leave anything to chance and promises that Ford will do everything to grant his Finnish driver a third driver’s title before his retirement.
Since the Rally Ireland, and his accident, Marcus Gronholm is in a difficult position because even by winning the rally, Loeb can be crowned by scoring at least 4 points in the championship, which means a fifth place. But as the saying goes, where there is life, there is hope. Ford still has a chance to win both titles and will throw their last efforts into the battle this weekend:
“From what I remember, Marcus [Gronholm] has done more for us in the past two years than anyone else, and this will obviously be his last rally…,” stated Wilson. “Who knows, maybe he’ll change his mind, but for the moment, it’s his last rally,” he insisted.
« We were extremely disappointed for him in Ireland, but we are wholeheartedly with him for this final challenge and are hanging on his results… until the end. »
Gronholm allowed Ford to win two constructors’ world championship titles in two years with the American firm. An already satisfying record, but the Finn knows that he will have to bear the emotional cost.
« Maybe on Sunday I’ll have a strange feeling because I will actually realize that the competition is over for me… but I’m going to win this rally first. » claimed the 39-year-old driver already.
« The last two rallies weren’t perfect, but in Great Britain my goal will be victory, and I will have to achieve it to aim for the title… »
