The manager of Xevi Pons, Jordi Roquer, has expressed confidence regarding a return of the former Citroën and Subaru driver to the WRC circuit in 2008, likely at the wheel of a remodeled Subaru Impreza WRC.
Pons joined the Subaru World Rally Team in the middle of the 2007 season and was supposed to be part of the team in 2008, but due to issues with his sponsors, he was not at the start in Monte-Carlo.
« We are currently in talks with Subaru for a possible return of Xevi in four to five rallies, explains Jordi Roquer. « As of today, I cannot say which rallies he will participate in, as it largely depends on the launch date of the new Impreza. Indeed, we believe it is more interesting to wait for the release of the new model before making a comeback. »
The news broke as Pons’ co-driver, Xavier Amigo, 35, announced his retirement from professional rallying, ending a 12-year career.
Xavier Amigo made his mark in 2006 when he won the Spanish asphalt championship alongside Dani Sola. The same year, he finished second in the national gravel road races. “I always said that the age of 35 would mark a decisive turning point in my career,” explains Xavier Amigo. “If I had a stable professional contract at the time, I could have continued, but Xavier Pons did not receive any confirmation from the management. However, it remains a very rich period in my life, but out of respect for my family, I must now direct my future onto a new path.”
