For the third day of the presence week in Jerez, Spain, it was Mark Webber in the Red Bull RB4 who set the fastest time of the day. The Australian driver was the only one to break the 1:19 barrier per lap, ahead of the Williams by more than four-tenths.
Red Bull has shown good progress since the beginning of the year, notably thanks to the introduction of the dolphin fin-type wing, and confirms it today with Webber, although this good time is probably due to a low fuel load and freshly fitted tires.
Webber then precedes the two Williams FW30s, with Rosberg beating his teammate Nakajima by about 2 tenths of a second.
4th, Fernando Alonso continues the development of the Renault R28 with Nelson Piquet. However, the Spaniard is already a second off the best time and is ahead of Robert Kubica in the BMW by more than a tenth… The latter was the most enduring today with 116 laps.
The Polish driver particularly tested the braking system of his new single-seater as well as new aerodynamic elements. His teammate, Heidfeld, is 11th with 109 laps to his credit.
Hamilton, who set the fastest time yesterday, is only 6th today with McLaren. He is ahead of David Coulthard in the second Red Bull, who suffered a problem in the morning and was forced to abandon the car on the track.
Another author of a red flag, Nelson Piquet in the Renault, likely fell victim to an oil leak, given the fluid that was escaping from the R28 in the afternoon.
Honda was in testing with Button and Barrichello. Both men did few laps and ended up with only the 13th and 15th fastest times. Last, Adrian Sutil was making his return with Force India.
With more than 4000 fans present today, undoubtedly due to the presence of Fernando Alonso, the season is already off to a good start in Spain. The 9 teams will return to the track tomorrow for the final day of the week.
