The leader of several motorsport teams, including one in ChampCar, Derrick Walker, has expressed great pessimism about the future of the American series.

Walker indeed commented on the future of the discipline yesterday during a press conference, stating that the ongoing negotiation between Champcar and the IRL – Indy Racing League – would likely lead to a merger of the two championships in the short term. Walker also admits that such an event could very well be fatal to his team.

« We have seen that all the elements were in place to close down Champcar. I don’t know how yet, but for me this discipline will unfortunately soon be dead… »

On his side, the executive vice president of ChampCar, David Higdon, denied all statements regarding the cessation of the series: « We have heard these rumors since Friday and, as we have continued to say since then, our doors remain open. »

Walker also denounced the fact that many teams did not receive the money they were owed at the end of last season. This would be why several of them only started pre-season testing in Sebring last week.

« A month ago, some teams had not received their money… I don’t know if it has been resolved since then. »

« We have been considering for a while transferring our team to IRL. So we really hope for a merger between the two disciplines. This would save us from spending 1.3 million Dollars to register in the other discipline as Champcar is closing. »
