The Spanish insurance company, Mutua Madrileña, sponsor of Renault from 2003 to 2006 and then of McLaren last year, had decided to withdraw from Formula 1 a few months ago after Alonso’s departure from the Woking team. The company officially announced its return to Renault today.
Mutua Madrilena had insisted that Alonso’s return to Renault this season had not prompted them to leave the English team. However, a clause in their contract, stipulating the importance of Fernando Alonso in their agreement, may have allowed them to leave McLaren.
Today, as the rumors suggested, the Spanish insurance company wishes to reunite with its protégé, the double world champion, and announces a two-year contract with the diamond brand for approximately 15 million dollars.
“We are happy to renew a partnership that has proven to be strong and dynamic in the past,” commented Flavio Briatore, director of Renault F1.
In close collaboration with Mutua Madrilena and the many other partners, we can see a very positive future with Renault, especially since we are working very hard to reach the top this season!
The President and CEO of Mutua Madrilena – Ignacio Garralda – added: « The partnership with the ING Renault F1 Team is a logical extension of our strategic approach. It is indeed the most effective way to communicate with the public! »
« We began our journey in Formula 1 with this team, and we are convinced that returning will provide both parties with a future full of good news.
