The leaders of ChampCar and the IRL officially announced this morning the merger of the two disciplines, with immediate effect on the championships.
For a week now, the heads of these two American single-seater championships have been in negotiations to simply find a merger of the two categories.
Twelve years ago, the single-seater championship in the USA split into two to cater to a higher demand from circuits. However, since 1996, various events have led to a decline in the popularity of both disciplines, with NASCAR becoming the favorite of Americans.
To solve this problem, Champcar and the IRL have decided to reunify once again.

A spokesperson also stated that a press conference will be held to provide as many details as possible, but no date has been given.
He also announced that several teams currently present in Champcar had chosen to transfer their team to the now unified ‘IRL’ championship.
The 2008 season will also feature several circuits that were previously part of Champcar but will now host the IRL. The calendar is therefore expected to be expanded.
