Ferrari has made clear progress since last year and is ready to fight for the final victory in the championship in 2008, Michael Schumacher said after his tests in an F2008 in Barcelona.
The 39-year-old German had never driven the F2008, but returned to the heat of action yesterday for the first of three planned test days at the Catalunya circuit.
Schumacher was able to help the Scuderia with his experience because in 2008 there will be no more traction control.
The seven-time world champion explains that the new car is a real step forward compared to last year’s.
« The progress is very clear. We are satisfied in all areas, so why would that change just a few days before the first Grand Prix, » Schumacher said after his tests.
« I believe we are ready and prepared to fight for victory. »
He predicts an exciting season and believes that Ferrari and McLaren will be neck and neck in the race for the World Constructors’ Championship title.
« It will be very interesting. You have two contenders, which is different from last year. You are asking yourself a number of questions about McLaren’s competitiveness, and this is very exciting. »
The German stated that the absence of traction control and engine braking will make driving a bit more delicate.
« You would be surprised at all the areas that need work without all these systems, » he added.
« You must remain cautious, especially in the morning when the track is very slippery, you must then use your brain. »
