Ron Dennis has just put an end to weeks of rumors by confirming his position as team principal of the McLaren-Mercedes team in 2008.
At 60, he promised the staff at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, just before leaving for Melbourne, that he would not leave them.
He took over the reins of the McLaren empire in 1980 and has since led the team to win several world titles, the last of which was in 1999 with Mika Hakkinen. The Briton has experienced a difficult period over the past 12 months.
And for good reason, his team was fined a record 100 million dollars and lost all of its points in the constructors’ championship. A certain espionage affair is said to be the cause…!
Dennis was also criticized for his poor management between Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton in 2007, which resulted in the departure of the Spaniard after only one year with McLaren, even though his contract stipulated three.
He currently holds three positions within the McLaren Group: Chairman and CEO of the McLaren Group and team principal of the F1 team.
