The Australian dream of BMW-Sauber…

BMW-Sauber says it’s ready to win the Australian Grand Prix tomorrow after admitting it was a bit surprised by the positions achieved by its drivers, Heidfeld and especially Kubica.

The German team, third force in 2007, faced difficulties with its new car at the start of the pre-season. And for good reason, balance issues were slowing its progress.

But BMW has since made great progress and arrived in Melbourne with high hopes.

The team showed all its brilliance today in the qualifying session, with Robert Kubica positioned on the front row right behind Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren. His teammate, Nick Heidfeld, will start from the fifth position.

BMW motorsport boss, Mario Theissen, admits that his team is much better than he had predicted. He is adamant that BMW will seek nothing but victory tomorrow.

« I would be happy with a podium, of course, but we cannot hold back. If there is a chance to shine even more, we will need to seize that opportunity, » said Theissen from Melbourne.

« I think we are strong enough in racing. We have had some good long runs. Everything depends on the length of the first stint, and at the moment, I have no idea. »

Referring to his statements on Thursday in which it was said that BMW was targeting a victory a little later in the season, he added: « Well, it’s two days later…! »

We will see. Apparently, we are better than we thought. I don’t know when this victory will happen, but I am truly convinced that we can do it.
