Peter Mucke, the general director of the German Touring Car Championship – DTM – has expressed great optimism about Ralf Schumacher’s chances of success this year. According to him, former Formula 1 drivers are more likely to succeed in DTM.
Ralf Schumacher, after a disastrous year in F1 with Toyota last season, has decided to turn the page this season, finding a seat in DTM, in his home country. The German will drive a 2007 Mercedes C-Class. He will team up with Maro Engel, whom he met last week during tests at the Mugello circuit in Italy. The brother of the seven-time F1 world champion has been slowly adapting to his new conditions and could only manage the 7th fastest time in the tests…
The duo Ralf [Schumacher] and Maro [Engel] is of an extremely high level, confirmed Mucke to a German sports newspaper. Moreover, they have what it takes to shine in DTM!
« If everything goes correctly and they are there at the right time, they are bound to win races… »
Mucke was pleasantly surprised to see the two drivers, who didn’t know each other before, collaborating so easily: « I saw them working together. They are very professional despite their history and careers. Everything opposes them and yet, they seem to get along very well. »
« For now, in terms of competitiveness, we are not sure of anything, since the season hasn’t started yet… but judging by the tests, they seem very efficient. »
Schumacher and Engel will have other opportunities to improve at the end of March, in Oschersleben, where the final pre-season tests begin on March 31.
