The officials of the Sepang circuit will consult with the Formula 1 teams and their drivers this weekend during the Malaysian Grand Prix, before making a decision on the possibility of making this event a night race in 2009.
Although the circuit stated a few weeks ago that it intended to become a Grand Prix held at night, it promised to consult with key stakeholders and partners before making a decision.
The CEO of the Sepang Circuit, Datuk Azmi Murad, told the New Straits Times that nothing would be decided before the end of Sunday’s race.
« At the moment, it’s only an option, » he commented about a night race.
« Nothing is finalized yet. We are still in the information gathering and entry phase. We also need to consult with Formula 1 drivers and teams as well as key MotoGP stakeholders before we can make a proper assessment. »
« It’s not just about whether or not to do it; it’s also about determining how we want to do it. »
Sepang should opt for the installation of a permanent lighting system rather than temporary installations.
Azmi added: « We need to consult the industry, competition must be encouraged to find the best possible specifications, before choosing. »
« The decision will also take into account the economic cost of the project. »
