GP – Free Practice 3: Heidfeld Ahead of the Ferraris!

Nick Heidfeld set the fastest time in the third free practice session. The BMW driver, in wet conditions at the Sepang circuit (Malaysia), outpaced the two Ferraris in his last quick lap, which had been leading five minutes before the end of the session with Felipe Massa and Kimi Räikkönen.

The McLarens are far from the best in this session. Hamilton and Kovalainen did not choose to run light. The MP4/23s were therefore loaded with fuel as usual and only managed 11th and 16th fastest times.

Free practice 3 was summed up by a fierce battle between the Scuderia drivers, with Massa beating his teammate and vice versa with each new lap time.

Jarno Trulli’s Toyota made its way to the top of the rankings by securing fourth position, while the Red Bulls once again demonstrated their strong performances with Webber and Coulthard finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, nearly half a second behind the leader.

The first Renault is that of the young Brazilian Nelson Piquet, who has shown good progress since his first GP in F1. His teammate, Alonso, is 3 tenths behind with the 12th fastest time.

Jenson Button (Honda), Sebastian Vettel (Toro Rosso), and Timo Glock (Toyota) completed the top ten.

A slight disappointment for the Williams team, who are only 13th and 15th, just like Kubica, on the second BMW, nearly one and a half seconds behind his teammate.

Bourdais could only set the 18th fastest time but at least was able to gain experience, as his car did not encounter any major issues.
