The FIA stated that it would continue to examine the front suspension of the Red Bull Racing RB4 even if the team took part in free practice 3 and qualifying.
The team took part in these trials just as the FIA had just confirmed that it would not take any action against the team after David Coulthard’s spectacular accident on Friday.
Red Bull Racing has been asked to submit a report detailing the condition of its suspensions. This report has been submitted to the FIA.
The FIA stated that this report should necessarily explain why the stewards would be right not to exclude the cars for safety reasons.
Article 2.3 of the technical regulations states that the stewards « of the meeting can exclude any single-seater whose construction is deemed dangerous.
Following the assessment of this issue, on Saturday morning, the FIA issued a statement announcing that the team was authorized to take part in the remainder of the Sepang Grand Prix.
The statement says: « After receiving the written report from Red Bull Racing and the verbal report from the technical delegate who conducted an inspection of the front suspension of the Red Bull car. The race stewards, at this stage, intend not to take any action under Article 2.3 of the 2008 F1 Technical Regulations. However, this matter will remain under review during the Grand Prix. »
