Lewis Hamilton is the author of the day’s ‘sensational’ headline as an accident is attributed to him during free practice 2 of the Bahrain Grand Prix. He hopes that his progress will not be slowed by this incident.
Hamilton lost control of his McLaren at the exit of turn 7 and went straight into the safety barriers, severely damaging his car.
Despite this accident, he finished fourth during free practice 2. The British driver admitted to approaching the corner too quickly.
« It’s a shame to have finished the tests in this manner. The accident was impressive but I’m fine. Hopefully, the damage to the car isn’t too significant, » said the vice world champion.
« We should have modified our engine and gearbox. In the first session, we kept the same set of tires throughout the session. »
The circuit is obviously very dirty but has evolved throughout the two practice sessions.
Hamilton finished behind his teammate Heikki Kovalainen, with the third fastest time. The Finn stated that he was already comfortable with his car despite difficult conditions.
« As this track is very hard on the brakes, the focus was therefore placed on this point during the first session while ensuring the collection of as much data as possible, » he commented.
The track was very dirty, and there was almost no grip at the start. We decided it was pointless to use more than one set of tires.
« In the second session, we focused on the overall setup of the single-seater and the assessment of the tires. We had the capability to finish first, there wasn’t much difference. I’m comfortable in the car and I’m looking forward to the rest of the weekend. »
