Will the Renault R28 arrive in version B in Barcelona?

For the double world champion Fernando Alonso, the start of the season has been rather frustrating. Indeed, the R28 is currently far from allowing its drivers to reach the podium. The Spaniard also admitted that his car was not competitive enough in Bahrain and was unable to score any points.

Deep improvements on the Renault are therefore planned and will make their appearance at the Spanish Grand Prix in three weeks. Alonso will race on home soil and he will be eager to please the many supporters who come to cheer him on. That’s why Renault has high hopes for this new package, even though the native of Oviedo does not expect it to allow his team to make a real leap forward.

The executive director of engineering, Pat Symonds, stated that the modifications made to the R28 would be numerous. But that will be the case for all the teams on the grid.

Each team will have to complete a major program that it will have prepared since the beginning of the season. So there is a lot to come. »

« We are working on a new aerodynamic package that looks quite good, I would say. We tested some parts of it at Elvington earlier in the week and we are reasonably satisfied with it. We have also made some good changes to the suspension. »

Symonds estimates that the new package should represent a performance gain of around five-tenths of a second per lap. Considering that at the same time, the other teams should gain about three-tenths of a second, he believes that the R28 will be able to fight for points again.

The Briton also admits that after a difficult 2007 season, Renault took a long time to try to solve the problems encountered last year, which hindered the development of the R28.

« We spent time analyzing and solving our problems but we are still lagging behind. The time we lost in understanding the problems is time lost in development. »
