Korea will become the 23rd nation represented in the A1 Grand Prix, the World Cup of Motorsport, in the upcoming 2008/09 season.

The new team was officially announced following the signing of Joshua Kim, a Korean businessman, who aims to develop motorsport in his country. The contract was signed yesterday in Shanghai, China, as the penultimate round of the season was underway.

« South Korea is the fifth-largest automobile industry in the world, but as a nation, we are not familiar with motorsport in general. That is the main reason that prompted me to join the A1GP. » commented Kim, director of Kim Omnibus, who will create this team in partnership with the Korean company GGE – publicly traded.

The Koreans love sports, but they know nothing about motorsports. Thanks to A1GP, motorsports will become more popular here…

The Asia regional director of A1GP, David Clare, added: « The addition of the A1 Team Korea is yet another example of our phenomenal growth in Asia. We are committed to giving new countries additional fans for this sport. »

Korea, which has decided to compete as a unified team between South Korea and North Korea, will participate in the 4th season of the A1 GP. The 23 teams will have cars equipped with engines and chassis by Ferrari. The driver’s talent and the team’s good settings will make the difference.

For now, no driver has been confirmed yet, but Recardo Bruins Choi, aged 22, and who secured a 4th position in the German F3, seems to be the favorite.
