ITV in Great Britain won the prestigious BAFTA in the Sports category for the second consecutive year, thanks to its perfect coverage of last year’s Canadian Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton’s tribulations thus allowed the channel to win this award ahead of other sporting events like the Oxford/Cambridge regatta, the Wimbledon men’s final, or the Rugby World Cup semi-final between England and France.
The commentator for ITV, James Allen, stated that this award shows that Bernie Ecclestone’s decision to give BBC the broadcast rights for F1 events is unfair, as he believes the current coverage is sufficient, as evidenced by this trophy.
« The BBC now has a standard to uphold, so the bar is set high for next year. In any case, this award shows that it was not a lack of quality in the coverage that caused this change, » commented Allen.
