A colorful start to the season for the BMW-Sauber team as they are currently in second place in the constructors’ standings. Like last year, of course, but McLaren was disqualified then.
But, to balance this picture, it is necessary to recall the performance of the German team at the last Grand Prix in Spain. Indeed, for the first time since the start of the season, BMW had no driver on the podium, and Heidfeld finished the race out of the points. Could such an experience happen again?
Nick Heidfeld – Racing Driver
« I am looking forward to the Istanbul race, particularly with that famous Turn 8, the main feature of this circuit. It got a name after the very first Grand Prix because it is so challenging that it causes many spins and off-track excursions. »
« But beyond the track, I am delighted to be in Istanbul. This city is a completely unique international metropolis. »
Robert Kubica – Race Car Driver
« I don’t have very good memories regarding the races at Istanbul Park, for example, the 2006 Grand Prix which wasn’t good for me. Of course, this time I hope to have better luck. »
« The circuit is very interesting. Istanbul Park is one of the tracks where you have to find the right balance between corners taken at low and high speeds. »
Mario Theissen – Director BMW Motorsport:
« Our objectives for this Turkish Grand Prix are clear: we want to consolidate our position among the leaders, where Ferrari is currently the benchmark. For the fifth race of the season, we will present the details of the improvements to the F1.08. »
« This ultramodern circuit is a real success and represents a true challenge. The race has been moved to the spring, which should entail additional adaptation requirements for the teams and their equipment. Last year, we had to contend with temperatures around 36 degrees on race day. »
