The FIA could impose heavy sanctions on the organizers of the Turkish Grand Prix after two stray dogs ran onto the track during Sunday’s GP2 race.
This incident highlights a clear lack of security, said the spokesperson for the International Automobile Federation (FIA).
How can such a thing happen on a circuit that has been hosting a Formula 1 race for such a short time?
« The FIA’s safety commission will conduct a thorough investigation that will be referred to the world council, » he added.
Asked about possible consequences for the circuit, the spokesperson stated: « No sanction is excluded at this stage. »
Bruno Senna hit one of the two dogs on the track during the second GP2 race at the Istanbul Park circuit.
The 24-year-old driver, approaching the top of a bump, had only a fraction of a second to react and escaped without injury. The impact with the dog occurred at the right front suspension of the single-seater.
Formula 1 race director Charlie Whiting stated on Sunday that he would send a report to the FIA.
This incident was not the first to occur on a track where an F1 race takes place. Indeed, during the free practice sessions of the 2004 Brazilian Grand Prix, the same thing happened. The session had been interrupted.
