Bernie Ecclestone, the Formula 1 boss, stated that he will defend his share for the future of the sport.

Reacting to a letter from Mosley addressed to national automobile clubs last week, the Briton warned that the governing body risks losing control of F1 if it were to be removed from its functions. Ecclestone said he was surprised by such words.

« I sincerely hope this is not a declaration of war because if it is, we will have to defend ourselves, » Ecclestone told the Times.

« I don’t think Max meant that in the letter. I don’t want to go to war with Max, and I hope he doesn’t want to do that with me. »

I am sorry if the press has relayed information he doesn’t like, but we have no influence on the FIA.

Ecclestone has decided, in turn, to write a letter to the various national clubs to clarify things.

« We have decided to get in touch with all the clubs Max wrote to, with a response to the questions raised in his letter, » continued Ecclestone.

« I think that the FIA General Assembly on June 3 is scheduled for one reason only: To decide whether or not Max is the right person to be president. »

Mosley will be present this weekend in Monaco for the Grand Prix. It will be the first time the president sets foot in the paddocks since the famous revelations about his private life.
