Fernando Alonso took full responsibility for his collision with Nick Heidfeld during the Monaco Grand Prix held on Sunday.

The Renault driver was trying to make up ground by using extreme tires given the weather conditions. The Iberian was much faster than the German but was stuck behind the BMW driver for a number of laps.

On lap 14, he attempted an inside overtaking move on Heidfeld and made contact with his car. Alonso damaged his front wing and had to replace it. He then lost any chance of finishing in the top 8. As for Heidfeld, he suffered a slow puncture.

Speaking to Spanish journalists after the race, the double world champion admitted that his attempt was a bit too ‘far-fetched’.

« Everything was going well, but on lap 7, I reached the Casino corner where I started aquaplaning. »

« During the same lap, we had the intervention of the first safety car. The track was very wet. From that moment, it stopped raining, and the track began to dry, » explained Alonso.

« I tried to overtake Heidfeld at a place where you can’t overtake. »

« So, it’s my fault. From there, we needed a miracle, » added the Spaniard, who finished in 10th place.
