Kubica leader but Kubica realistic

Robert Kubica remains realistic about his chances of victory in the drivers’ championship; he believes that the two teams, Ferrari and McLaren, are ahead of his own team, BMW Sauber.

The Pole has just won his first Formula 1 race at the Canadian Grand Prix.

After the first seven races of the season, Kubica has a four-point lead over Lewis Hamilton from McLaren and Felipe Massa from Ferrari.

But the BMW driver believes that defending his position will not be easy.

« It’s very nice to be the leader of the championship after seven races, but to win the championship, you have to be the leader after 18 races, » said Kubica during the Barcelona tests.

Of course, the situation is favorable but I think it will be difficult to defend this position.

« In reality, we are lacking a bit in performance compared to Ferrari and McLaren. »

Kubica stated that his first win will not change his racing approach.

« After the race, we analyze what happened, what could have gone better, and what we can improve. We are looking forward to the future and the upcoming races. That’s the most important thing, » he added.

The Pole acknowledged that the last 20 racing laps in Montreal were « boring », despite the danger of making a mistake.

In Montreal, the track conditions were very difficult and if you go 10 centimeters off the trajectory, it’s very slippery and it’s very easy to make a mistake.

« It was therefore important to maintain this concentration. »
