Felipe Massa has stated that it was a stroke of luck that allowed him to win the French Grand Prix at Magny-Cours.
However, the Ferrari driver started behind his teammate, Kimi Räikkönen. But the Finn had an exhaust problem with his car.
Massa took full advantage of this problem to secure his third win of the season and lead the championship standings after eight races. He has a four-point lead over Robert Kubica and a five-point lead over Räikkönen.
The Brazilian admitted he did not expect to win.
“It was fantastic. I did not expect this,” said Massa, who has won more races than any other driver this year.
« Sometimes we need a bit of luck. Today, I had some thanks to its escape. I think we are heading in the right direction. The team did a fantastic job. »
Massa, the winner with an advantage of over 17 seconds, admitted he was worried when the rain began to fall towards the end of the race.
« Sometimes, there are only a few drops and suddenly, the track is no longer the same. At the end of the race, the rain wasn’t strong enough to change the tires. »
Finally, he remains cautious about his title chances.
« We are only halfway through the championship and we have many races to go. We need to score points, even if it is not possible to win. »
