FIA president Max Mosley hopes that his legal success for invasion of privacy against the ‘News of the World’ will help change the behavior of tabloids in the future on this issue.
Mosley received £60,000 (more than €76,000) in damages. It is also rumored that the Briton received nearly £1 million (nearly €1,300,000) for invasion of privacy.
In a statement released by his lawyer after the verdict, Mosley said he was pleased with the outcome of the case and hopes it will serve as a warning to the entire press considering doing the same to him or other public figures.
« This judgment has allowed certain people from the tabloids to justify the shameful intrusion into my private life of which I was the victim, » stated Mosley.
« Under the law, we all have the right to privacy. The ‘News of the World’ did not respect this right. »
« The individuals involved and their lawyers then did everything they could to cause the most inconvenience in the hope that I would be discouraged from taking legal action. »
« I hope that my case will help deter the specialized British press from doing this again. I have learned not to be discouraged in adversity and how simple papers can destroy lives, knowing that a number of victims do not dare to file a complaint. I encourage them to do so if the situation arises for them. »
He added: « As I promised at the beginning, the damages will be paid to the FIA to continue the work for track safety and for the environment. »
« Finally, I would like to thank everyone who supported me during this very difficult time. »
