The last Hungarian Grand Prix, which took place in early August, saw a record attendance in its 22-year existence. The source is official as it comes from the government through its spokesman David Daroczi.
In 1986, Bernie Ecclestone dared to establish this sport on the other side of the Iron Curtain and is now rewarded with the arrival of over 200,000 people.
Since that date, attendance has always been strong at this circuit located near Budapest on the Hungaroring because Finnish fans practically consider it a national Grand Prix due to the proximity of the two countries.
The audience was even larger in 2008 due to the influx of new supporters from Poland thanks to the national hero, Robert Kubica.
Daroczi stated that the number of spectators in 2008 was 10 to 15% higher than last year.
During the event, Ecclestone and the Hungarian sports minister signed a new contract, ensuring the race at the Hungaroring until 2016.
The spokesperson concluded by saying that the event brought in at least 16 million dollars (more than 10,740,000 euros) in revenue to the state.
