Nelson Piquet must wait until the end of September to find out if he will be retained by Renault in 2009. The information was revealed by the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport.
According to the article published on Friday, the French team recently decided not to exercise an option on the current contract of the Brazilian recruit.
Renault and the 23-year-old driver have agreed to postpone the decision deadline from the end of August to the end of September.
The former world champion, Fernando Alonso and current teammate of Piquet, had announced that he would not make any decisions about his future with Renault before the autumn.
Auto Motor und Sport reports that if Alonso decides to leave, then the current test driver of the French team, Romain Grosjean, would be in the best position to replace him.
However, if the Iberian chooses to stay with Renault in 2009, Grosjean, 22 years old, could still participate in his first Grand Prix at the expense of Piquet.
