European GP – Can BMW-Sauber Still Dream of Title(s)?

The challenge is significant for BMW-Sauber this race weekend. Certainly, none of the teams are familiar with this new Valencia circuit, but if the German team performs well or even wins this European Grand Prix, its status as the revelation of the year will be indisputable.

In case of victory, a revelation, BMW-Sauber would become the leader for the constructors’ title, but does the team have the means? One thing is certain: Heidfeld and Kubica are more motivated than ever.

Nick Heidfeld – Racing Driver

« I am always delighted when a new circuit arrives on the calendar, and I am particularly eager to take part in the experience. It’s a true urban circuit in the sense that it runs through the city center, unlike the tracks in Melbourne or Montreal. The race itself will probably be more akin to the Monaco Grand Prix.

« I really love Valencia, which I have visited several times. We do a lot of testing on the permanent circuit in Cheste, and we have launched our new car there several times. »

Robert Kubica – Racing Driver

« I am very eager to arrive in Valencia because I am a fan of urban circuits in general. They are very demanding because they are often winding with surface changes on the ground. When you make a mistake, you can’t avoid obstacles. Anyway, there will be plenty of runoff areas for safety reasons. The FIA has made a lot of efforts in terms of safety. »

« Even more on a street circuit, setting up the single-seater is crucial to facilitate driving. Additionally, it is very important to walk the track before driving on it for the first time, to best understand the characteristics of the circuit. »

Mario Theissen – Director of BMW Motorsport:

« After the summer break, we begin three European races and four outside the European continent. Our goal is to confirm the good results from the first half of the season. »

The European Grand Prix will take place in a seaside area. We look forward to racing in this city, especially since BMW has a certain proximity to a number of organizations in Valencia. For example, the BMW Racing Formula Center is the training site from which our young talents emerge and subsequently participate in the BMW Formula series.

Willy Rampf – Technical Director:

« Valencia hosts a new round of the calendar. It is an urban circuit, but drivers will exceed 300 km/h. Thanks to the help provided by our simulation programs, we are able to calculate in advance the reliability and grip of the tires as well as brake wear. This means we will start this race weekend with a good foundation. »
