Formula 1 drivers and several personalities observed three minutes of silence in Valencia this Friday in tribute to the victims of the Madrid plane crash.
The former world champion, Fernando Alonso, stated on Thursday that he hoped to see other drivers join in this tribute. It took place at noon shortly after the end of the first free practice session.
Alonso was joined by other F1 drivers, officials from the Valencia circuit, and personalities connected to the sport. For example, Bernie Ecclestone, McLaren’s boss Ron Dennis, and Williams’ Frank Williams were present.
The organizers of the GP2 series delayed the start of the practice session to allow for a moment of remembrance.
Speaking on Thursday, Alonso said that the Madrid crash had cast a shadow over his second home Grand Prix.
« For me, this tragedy will change my weekend because it’s a real catastrophe. All Spaniards are in shock and so am I, very much. It’s probably the saddest start to a weekend that I am experiencing. »
