Assessment – A weekend Renault would have preferred to avoid

Renault concludes the 2008 European Grand Prix on the new Valencia circuit with a disappointing result as Nelson Piquet, the team’s only driver to finish, ranks 11th while his teammate had to retire following a collision on the first lap.

After a tough qualification on Saturday afternoon, the drivers of the Diamond started today mid-pack and were consequently prepared to compete in a tough race. The race of

Fernando Alonso’s race was shorter than expected as he lost his rear wing on the first lap due to a collision, which ultimately led to his retirement.

Nelson Piquet, for his part, was able to continue his race despite a damaged front nose and tried to make a comeback. On a one-stop strategy, the young Brazilian managed to regain a few positions to eventually finish 11th at the end.

A disappointing weekend therefore for the Losange team who wish to focus on the next round of the world championship which will take place in Spa, Belgium in about two weeks. Until then, Renault will be on track next week at Monza for a three-day testing session that is hoped to be productive.

Fernando Alonso – Retirement:

I knew my weekend would be more difficult right from the qualifications. At the start, I was hit by Nakajima and lost my wing. My mechanics did everything they could to allow me to continue the race, but it was already compromised. I’m really disappointed because I was hoping to have a good race for this second Grand Prix in Spain and for my supporters who came to support me. I now want to focus on the rest of the season and the next race at Spa.

Nelson Piquet – 11th:

« The first lap was hectic, I got caught in traffic and lost several positions. I then tried to climb back up, but my wing was damaged, and it was ultimately difficult to overtake. It’s a shame not to make it into the Top 10 today; let’s hope to do better in two weeks at Spa, during the next Belgian Grand Prix. »

Flavio Briatore – General Manager Renault:

« It’s a weekend to forget. However, our goal remains to fight for fourth place in the Constructors’ championship; we must now focus on the upcoming races and continue our efforts to be stronger there. »

Pat Symonds – Executive Director of Engineering:

It’s a shame to leave this superb circuit without any points on the board. We are particularly sorry for Fernando who was unable to have the race he was capable of for his second home Grand Prix, but we must look ahead and prepare for the next race.
