What if BMW turned its back on Nick Heidfeld?

After a mediocre performance in Valencia last weekend, doubts have resurfaced regarding Nick Heidfeld’s future with the BMW-Sauber team.

« When we are able to do so, we must score the maximum points with both our cars, » said team boss, Mario Theissen.

For this European race, Robert Kubica finished on the podium while Heidfeld only crossed the finish line in ninth place.

Replacing the German could prove difficult as it would be necessary to find another driver with at least the same basic potential. Furthermore, Heidfeld is reportedly solidly under contract for 2009.

The German press announces that its managers, Andre Theuerzeit and Werner Heinz, acknowledge the seriousness of the situation and, for safety reasons, are considering other possibilities.

Theuerzeit was seen more than once in the Red Bull motorhome in Valencia, perhaps to actually find out about the vacancies at Toro Rosso?

Another team that might have a spot to offer in 2009 could be Honda, and Nick Fry reportedly stated to the German daily AZ.
