Update on the BMW-Sauber driver lineup for 2009

BMW-Sauber has asked Nick Heidfeld to raise his level to show that he deserves his place alongside Robert Kubica for next year. He must demonstrate that he has overcome his early season problems.

The team confirmed, in May, Kubica with an option for 2009.

Reliable sources have also revealed that attempts made by BMW management to retain the Pole for a new three-year period have failed. He remains inflexible: He wants to be on the transfer market in 2010.

For although Heidfeld made significant progress in recent races by overcoming his issues in qualifying, his setbacks in Hungary and Valencia have once again cast doubt on his abilities.

The director of BMW Motorsport, Mario Theissen, wants to be certain that the German is the right person for his team in 2009.

When asked if he was convinced of Heidfeld’s abilities for next year, Theissen said: « I am not sure. The things we observed in Valencia were mixed, although in the second part of Saturday’s qualifying, he put in an almost perfect lap. »

I hope these comments will give him enough confidence to be up to par again in the race.

Finally, when asked if the qualification factor would play a key role in deciding his driver line-up for 2009, Theissen explained: « Yes, because starting from the second row or the 10th place in the race makes a big difference. »

BMW-Sauber has not been able to confirm Kubica for three new seasons, even though, according to Theissen, long-term contracts remain the most favorable.

« In F1, stability is an important factor, that’s what I can say. This applies to both drivers and engineers. »
