Robert Kubica has ruled out returning to live permanently in his homeland, Poland.
The recent successes of the BMW-Sauber driver in Formula 1 have transformed his popularity rating in Central European countries. Kubica, at 23 years old, is undoubtedly Poland’s biggest celebrity.
However, the main party involved does not share this general hysteria.
« I am proud of what I have accomplished as a driver, but I do not race in Formula 1 to be popular, » he told the Swiss newspaper Blick.
This situation is the same as what has happened and continues to happen with Fernando Alonso in Spain. Kubica stated that he was happy that his success allowed Poland to reach the highest level in motorsports.
« People see me as an example, even though Poland is not a country traditionally oriented towards motorsports. We’ve had a bit of rallying, but that’s all. I think I have opened a door, » continued Kubica.
His family still lives in Krakow, he admitted that he would like to return home more often but that he can do so less and less…
« It has really become impossible to return to the country to relax. If I want to go for a jog, there is always someone following me. Relaxing properly is important to gather enough energy for the competition. »
« With the exception of what happens on the track, I don’t like the status of F1. I don’t need the spotlight on me, » he concluded.
