The penalty for Lewis Hamilton benefits the BMW team, which moves from the third step of the podium to the second through its driver Nick Heidfeld. That’s two more points, not forgetting the 6th place of Robert Kubica.
For the German, it’s a bit of a resurgence as he moves up to 5th position in the drivers’ standings ahead of Kovalainen, while Kubica has the luxury of overtaking the reigning world champion for 3rd place.
Nick Heidfeld – 2nd:
« I had a fantastic weekend and I am very happy. At the beginning, I was better than other drivers in front of me. Then, I decided to go for the outside line, but unfortunately, Heikki Kovalainen crashed into my car. This can happen, and I was lucky that my single-seater wasn’t damaged. »
« Of course, I lost many positions. Later in the race, I got stuck in traffic. When the drizzle came, we decided to switch to rain tires. »
« When I came out of the pits after this final stop, I asked over the radio how many laps were left to do. My engineers said two. I really thought we had made the wrong decision, but no, it paid off. »
Robert Kubica – 6th:
« I am not satisfied with the result. Today, I could have finished on the podium. We had a problem during the second stop. I lost two or three positions then rejoined the track behind Nick Heidfeld. When it started to rain, he went to the pits to change his tires. »
« I couldn’t do the same thing because it would have taken me too much time since I was just behind him. I had no information about the weather because I had problems with my radio. Nevertheless, we scored a lot of points today. »
Mario Theissen – BMW Motorsport Director:
« It was an eventful race both at the start and in the final laps. Nick Heidfeld was involved in a collision on his first lap and, unlike Robert Kubica, lost several positions. »
The mechanics had a problem with Kubica’s fuel inlet nozzle during his second stop. Nick Heidfeld and his race engineer made the right decision two laps before the end of the race by switching to wet tires. The team achieved its ninth podium finish and Robert Kubica finished 6th. With five races to go before the end of the season, the team has 107 points, four times more than in the entire 2007 season.
