In Monza, the Formula 1 teams signed and consequently approved the statute of the new Formula One Teams Association (FOTA), Association of Formula 1 Teams.
The new organization hopes to foster unity among the teams to formulate new rules to increase interest in the sport.
Ferrari’s president Luca di Montezemolo has been appointed as the first president of FOTA and the vice-president is none other than Toyota’s president John Howett.
Three commissions have been established. A ‘sports’ working group, led by McLaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh, a ‘technical’ working group led by Honda team principal Ross Brawn, and a third working group led by Renault boss Flavio Briatore.
The FOTA has promised to collaborate with the FIA and to work with the commercial rights holders of F1 to help them develop the sport.
In a statement released Thursday: « The FOTA is dedicated to the development of Formula 1 and will work alongside the FIA and the commercial rights holders to ensure the spectacle is always present while reducing costs and increasing revenues. »
