The German, aged 31, saw his contract expire at the end of the year. The team delayed announcing the second driver while Robert Kubica was made official a few weeks ago. Fernando Alonso could have taken the German’s place.
All these rumors ended this Monday when BMW confirmed its driver lineup for 2009.
Heidfeld will be on track for a fourth consecutive season with the Hinwil team. The German admitted that he was delighted BMW decided to retain him.
« I am very happy with this announcement and the trust that the team has in me, » stated Heidfeld.
« I have always said that I would be happy to stay with BMW-Sauber because we have managed to achieve our goals. I really hope we will be in a position to win the titles next year. »
Heidfeld is currently in fifth place in the standings and has scored 56 points so far.
