This has heavy consequences for Bourdais, who drops from sixth to 10th place at the end of the Japanese race. Massa is therefore in 7th and reduces the gap with Lewis Hamilton to five points.
Bourdais was joined after his second stop by Massa, who had not yet refueled. The incident occurred in the first corner.
The Ferrari tried to pass the Toro Rosso on the outside but the two cars made contact.
Ultimately, this penalty benefits Sebastian Vettel who moves into 6th position ahead of Massa. Red Bull with Mark Webber scores a point with an eighth place.
