Nelson Piquet was informed that his fourth place in the Japanese Grand Prix had no impact on Renault’s decision to keep him for an additional season.
The Brazilian delivered the best result of his F1 career at Fuji, providing valuable points for Renault, but Flavio Briatore, the team’s boss, stated that it was not enough to convince the most skeptical.
When asked if Piquet’s performance secured his future, Briatore said: « No, no. We have said that we will review the driver line-up at the end of the season. One race does not change our ideas. »
And although satisfied with Piquet’s performance in Japan, Briatore added that this result was only what was expected of him.
« It is normal for him to start having this kind of result. »
The test driver for the French team, Lucas di Grassi, is considered as the replacement for Piquet in case the Brazilian is not retained.
