Ferrari is struggling with its KERS

Ferrari’s technical director Aldo Costa claims that the Scuderia is still behind in the development of its KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System).

This system will be introduced in F1 at the beginning of next season, but development is difficult for many teams that had no experience in this area.

Costa admitted that he would have preferred to test the system on the track as some of his competitors did.

When asked what the biggest challenge for the next season was, he stated: « The KERS because it is a technology never tested before and the work to be done is enormous. »

« There have also been reliability issues. I cannot deny that we are a bit behind. Let’s say that I would already like to try our system, » added Costa for the Gazzetta dello Sport.

« We have a lot to do but time flies. Even though we have two more weeks compared to last year, we have to follow the collective testing schedule. There’s a test in mid-January and we can’t miss it. »

« We are still in the fight for the title and we have put a lot of resources into the F2008. Most of the components of the F2009 are already in production while the KERS is still on the test bench. »

According to Costa, the future single-seater will be different due to the regulatory changes that come into play.

« The rear wing will be larger but narrower, the bodywork smoother, and there will be a reconfiguration of the cooling system. »
