The energy drink giant Red Bull has acquired a 50% interest in the Toro Rosso Formula 1 team owned by Gerhard Berger.
Berger had bought the interests of Red Bull, led by Dietrich Mateschitz in 2006, after the Austrian billionaire took over the Minardi team and renamed it.
Today, Mateschitz announces that he has bought Berger’s shares, thus taking complete control of Toro Rosso.
« I am very grateful to Gerhard for his enormous contribution, » said Mateschitz. « Together we managed to create Toro Rosso and now the team is regularly among the top 10 and has scored points in the world championship. »
Toro Rosso was better than its big sister Red Bull this year, with a victory at the Italian Grand Prix and finishing ahead of Red Bull Racing in the Constructors’ World Championship.
The future of the team had been in doubt for some time after Mateschitz announced to the press his intention to sell the ‘Italian Red Bull’ earlier this year.
Let’s also clarify that the team will not change its name. It will remain the Red Bull Team B.
