According to Flavio Briatore, a contract will not be enough to keep Fernando Alonso with the French team beyond 2009 if he decides to leave.
After months of rumors, Renault announced last month that the 27-year-old Spaniard has signed a new contract to stay next year but also in 2010.
But in the comments published by the EFE news agency, Briatore asserts that the only guarantee of keeping the double world champion for 2010 is to have a winning car in 2009.
« We cannot offer him something else. If you have a bad car, you don’t keep any good drivers. »
Briatore added: « Our goal is to be world champion in 2009 with Fernando, and I think we have a good chance of achieving it. »
