Geoff Willis, technical director at Red Bull Racing, stated that the introduction of KERS in Formula 1 planned for 2009 will not promote overtaking.
He doubts that the recovered energy will spice up the race and believes that it will rather be the new aerodynamic regulations that will increase overtaking.
« The teams will soon learn to use and optimize KERS but it won’t greatly improve overtaking. It’s a technology developed for road use, but in F1, its application remains limited. »
« The new aerodynamic regulations will be the determining factor during the Grand Prix by creating new overtaking opportunities, » added the Briton.
The reduction of the rear wing allows a racing driver to follow more closely the car in front. The loss of downforce will not be as radical.
« Knowing this point, the next step would be to disrupt the airflow coming out of the car so that the single-seater following you has less chance of overtaking you, » he concluded.
