A unique Cosworth engine on the horizon for 2011!

The Formula 1 Teams Association (FOTA) presented a number of measures at the World Motor Sport Council to accelerate cost reduction. At the forefront is the introduction of a single engine supplier for all Formula 1 teams.

Following a unanimous agreement, the teams propose to involve a single engine supplier starting in 2011, who would provide ‘low-cost’ engines. Additionally, cost-cutting measures will be implemented over the next two years. Halving the current testing distance set at 30,000 kilometers would be one idea.

« The FOTA met in London to address the commercial challenges facing Formula 1. The teams had already unanimously approved measures that will significantly reduce costs in 2009. »

During Thursday’s session, the teams agreed to implement new substantial cost reduction measures for 2009 and 2010, as well as other initiatives aimed at improving the show.

« Furthermore, it was unanimously agreed that a new low-cost engine will be implemented in 2011. »

The FIA, through Max Mosley, has asked the teams to present concrete proposals to reduce costs in the sport. This new engine will be a ‘1.8-litre turbo’ equipped with an energy recovery system and designed to consume 30% less than the current fuel levels.

As of today, Cosworth has been approached to become the official engine supplier!

Mosley revealed that the FIA is currently in exclusive talks with Cosworth about an agreement starting in 2010.
