BMW has confirmed and reinforced its commitment to remain in Formula 1 despite the dramatic effects of the global economic crisis in recent weeks, which has already claimed a victim in the sport with the Honda team.
BMW is one of the manufacturers faring the best in the face of the crisis, but it is not immune to the global slowdown.
The German team joined Toyota by reaffirming its place on the F1 grid in 2009. The executive director of sales and marketing, Ian Robertson, told the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport that BMW was present in booming markets in China, Malaysia, and Bahrain.
Indeed, by being potentially the world champion among constructors for almost the entire 2008 season, BMW benefited from greater airtime on the same level as Mercedes and well beyond teams such as Toyota, Honda, or Renault.
« Our commitment to F1 is an essential part of our business strategy. Formula 1 is one of our best platforms to showcase our brand values. »
BMW will expand its involvement in motorsports in 2009 with a return to sportscars in the American Le Mans Series and an entry into the Superbike World Championship.
