The McLaren-Mercedes team has surpassed its rival, the Ferrari team, at the top of popularity, according to the results of a global survey conducted among fans.
A year after the turmoil of Fernando Alonso and the espionage scandal nicknamed “Stepneygate,” the team, powered by Mercedes, emerged as the most popular in the sport. The survey was conducted by Renault ING and published in the British magazine F1 Racing.
The study, which covers 160 countries and involves 70,000 people worldwide, showed that for 29% of respondents, McLaren is the favorite team.
The result is explained by the triumph of Lewis Hamilton after only two years of career because a year ago, the British team received only 21% of the votes.
The Scuderia Ferrari has been dethroned by a one-point margin (28% of supporters in 2008). The previous season, it was ahead with 30% of the votes.
« While Lewis deserves all the praise since becoming the sport’s youngest world champion, in reality, achieving this goal is due to the dedication and hard work of every team member at Woking, Brixworth, and Stuttgart, » stated the CEO of McLaren.
68% of respondents say they have been watching F1 for ten years or more, and a third watch at least one race per season.
